Rejection To Creation

I'm beginning to understand the meaning of rejection. I hear established authors talk of countless rejections and I am counting my own but what does it mean when an editor or agent rejects you?

You are not suitable.
You are not good enough!
You need to get a proper job and stop wasting time writing!
They are not rejecting you. Sometimes it feels that way when you invest so much of yourself in your writing and I do.

I like to think when my work is rejected it really means one of the following:

We are sending it back to you to work on it again.
We are sending it back to you to sell to someone else.
We are sending it back to you to put in a drawer for 10 years and when you're a brilliant author we'll ask you to send it back!

The latter is the one I'm striving for (the brilliant author bit not the 10 year wait) - children's author David Almond has already done it.

One thing rejection does for me:
It makes me write!
